Dr. Rotella's History

Dr. Maryjoyce Rotella is a chiropractor, acupuncturist and Chinese herbalist.  She grew up in Rochester, NY, and attended New York Chiropractic College, graduating in 1996.

She opened a private practice in Springfield, Missouri, while her husband was working on his doctorate in Psychology.  While in Missouri, she was also able to practice acupuncture under her chiropractic license with only a few hundred hours of training.  She quickly learned of the importance of this additional technique when her patients reported feeling better, much faster.

She then moved and opened a practice in NY, however, that state requires a practitioner to have a Master of Science degree in Oriental Medicine and pass the National Board exam.  So, Dr. Rotella went back to graduate school to obtain this prestigious degree at the New York College of Health Professions in Long Island, NY.  The program is rigorous, intense, and takes over three years and more than 1,500 hours of clinical and course work (a huge difference to the 100 hours needed in Missouri).  In addition, she also added the study of Chinese herbs to her acupuncture training (requiring many more hours and classes/exams/clinical work).

After obtaining this additional degree, she then took the National Board exam for her diplomat in acupuncture and Oriental medicine, which is not required in Maryland. However, Dr. Rotella strongly believes that national board exams provide the public with a certification that your practitioner has the knowledge and skills to practice.

Dr. Rotella then moved to Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania where she built a thriving practice, with 2 office locations.  As Nido Qubein says, “Change brings opportunity.”  Her husband’s career transferred him to the Maryland/DC area and now she has opened an office in Burtonsville, MD…..A centralized location, easy to get to from all locations in the Maryland/DC area.

This is my favorite location to live.  I love the area, the people, and being so close to everything!

Dr. Rotella has over 20 years of experience in clinical practice, and has treated most all ailments in some capacity.  A rare background, she not only has these separate and distinct degrees, but holds separate licenses in acupuncture, and chiropractic (with physical therapy privileges).

While Maryland does not require a national licensing exam for acupuncture, please feel comfort in knowing that Dr. Rotella holds this prestigious National Diplomat status in Oriental medicine (which included a national exam in both acupuncture and Chinese herbs) from NCCAOM.  All of these licenses require rigorous study and numerous hours of continuing education (CEUs) annually, which she enthusiastically maintains.

I strive to do my best, every day, to assist my patients in the healing process.  My only expectation is that you put in the full effort to allow your body what it needs to heal.

It is my pleasure to work with you and my honor to provide the tools your body requires to finds its healthiest balance.”
